COMMUNITY MEDIATION CENTER
OF RHODE ISLAND
Date: Tuesday, October 26, 2010
For the third year running and by popular request we will again hold a workshop titled How to Utilize Reflection in Your Mediation Practice. Ruthy Kohorn Rosenberg, who is an experienced mediator and trainer, a Board Member of CMCRI and of the New England Association for Conflict Resolution, the current student Mediation Coordinator at MIT in Cambridge, MA, and a frequent CMCRI volunteer, has kindly agreed for the third time to lead this popular workshop.
The workshop will focus on how reflective practice can be used as a tool by mediators of all skill and experience levels for improving practice. Participants will engage in "fish-bowl" style role-plays to identify critical moments in real-life mediations for the purpose of evaluating and learning from these critical moments, whether mediating alone or with co-mediators. Feedback from past workshops has been overwhelmingly positive, and mediators of all skill levels are encouraged to attend.

■ WHAT IS THE BASIC SKILLS MEDIATION TRAINING?
The Rhode Island state statute governing mediation requires 30 hours of training to ensure the provision of confidential mediation services. CMCRI’s Basic Skills Mediation Training (BMST) is a highly interactive 35-hour course, taught by experienced mediators and trainers, that schools participants in the fundamentals of the mediation process. The training takes place over several evenings and several Saturdays, usually over a period of three weeks. CMCRI routinely submits its programs for approval to the Rhode Island MCLE commission for CLE credits for Rhode Island attorneys, and to the NASW of Rhode Island for CEU credits for social workers. CMCRI offers training open to the public every Spring and Fall – please call for more information or to be added to our wait list.
■ HOW MUCH DOES THE TRAINING COST?
The training costs $500, plus a $25 materials fee. CMCRI additionally offers discounts to not-for-profit agencies signing up more than one person. Please call for more information.
■ WHAT WILL THE TRAINING CONSIST OF?
The BMST covers the following areas: Overview of the Mediation Process; Cultural Roles, Personal Responses and Theoretical Approaches to Conflict; Cultural Competence and Assumptions; the Role of the Mediator; Building Trust and Setting the Stage; Active Listening; Identification of Positions and Interests; Reframing and Summarizing Techniques; Setting an Agenda; Agreement Writing; and Ethics and Standards of Practice. The training is focused on practical skill-building with many group exercises and role-plays.
■ WHAT CAN I DO WITH MY TRAINING?
Two important qualities in being a successful leader, manager, or business person are understanding what others want and need and the ability to effectively communicate what you want and need. Mediation Training is a first step in becoming a more skilled leader, problem solver and peace maker. This training will teach facilitation skills and techniques to enhance communication, conflict resolution, information gathering, perspective-taking, problem-solving, and interest-based negotiating. Whether a trainee chooses to formally mediate or not, trained mediators are able to help others get past assumptions, acknowledge difficult and emotional conversation content, and help make communication productive.
Participants who have completed the training can provide confidential mediation services either on their own in the state of Rhode Island, as a volunteer mediator with CMCRI, or both. Many other states and programs accept mediation certificates from out of state, but each state varies in its requirements.
CMCRI offers many mediation opportunities both in the courts and in the community, with extensive mentoring, support and feedback for new mediators, and ongoing education opportunities for all mediators. Whether they opt to formally mediate or not, trainees can expect to exit the course with enhanced conflict resolution skills, including listening and observation skills; self-awareness and self-monitoring skills; the ability to identify issues and help people focus on problem-solving and the process; the ability to reframe and summarize as needed; and the ability to identify and address ethical dilemmas.
